A Norwegian health organization cited ThyroidChange in discussion of natural thyroid extract, however, the statement misrepresents ThyroidChange's perspective on natural thyroid extract.
RELIS Midt-Norge is a government organization dedicated to providing information on various drug treatments. They have support forums for acute care physicians to ask questions and gain further information. One question in this forum was from a physician who was caring for a patient with a history of thyroidectomy and was currently prescribed Erfa by his general practitioner. The physician was seeking further information on the use of natural thyroid extract. RELIS cites ThyroidChange in their answer and thus, prompted the following response from our organization. RELIS quickly responded to our contact. This exchange is a start to effective conversation regarding the use of natural thyroid extract as a treatment for hypothyroidism.

Dear Sir or Madam:
We hope this letter finds you well. We at ThyroidChange are very pleased to read about our advocacy group cited in your August 8, 2013, article entitled, “Thyroid – informasjon om iregistret preparat.” To be referenced by a prestigious organization such as yours is an honor; however, we were concerned since our position regarding natural thyroid extract was misrepresented. We felt it was imperative that we correct the misinformation.
As per your article, “The use of naturally derived thyroid extract is promoted on typical patient-run sites on the internet, where it is argued that this provides a more natural, and thus better, substitution of thyroid hormones” and our community was referenced as a source of this perception. ThyroidChange does not make any claim regarding natural thyroid extract being more “natural;” rather we believe it to be an effective treatment option that should be available to all patients. We support patients who do well on levothyroxine monotherapy and advocate for effective T3 containing therapies for those who are not provided symptoms relief on levothyroxine.
ThyroidChange is a grass-roots advocacy initiative which represents the global thyroid patient community. We work together to demonstrate the need for treatment options when treating thyroid disease. The current standard of TSH testing and levothyroxine monotherapy leaves many patients suffering. Whether due to the insufficiency of the TSH lab test/ranges or a reduced conversion of T4 to T3, patients continue to suffer symptoms of hypothyroidism such as depression, anxiety and hyperlipidemia. Many physicians fail patients by not testing beyond the TSH gold standard and/or not prescribing viable therapies such as natural thyroid extract. Research is demonstrating an improved quality of life while taking natural thyroid extract and is mentioned in the same article.[i]
Thank you again for acknowledging our community and for your work in the treatment of thyroid disease. We hope that through this letter we have made it clear that we do believe that natural thyroid extract is a viable treatment option that should be available to thyroid patients. We do not believe this as a result of it being “natural,” but as a result of its proven efficacy.
