Dear Senator/Representative _____________________________:
My name is ______________, and I am a constituent of yours. Thank you for all of your efforts in our community. I am writing on behalf of thyroid patients everywhere who are seeking to improve the health of thyroid patients who are left debilitated by symptoms. I would like to inform you of the desperate need for change in thyroid disease care, and I hope that you will please consider helping our cause.
Millions of patients with thyroid dysfunction have diminished quality of life due to physicians who improperly diagnose or treat thyroid conditions. Inaccurate teachings and outdated methodology prevail in the medical field, keeping many thyroid patients incredibly ill. ThyroidChange, a thyroid health information website, is comprised of thyroid disease patients and physicians who are seeking improved treatment in the field of endocrinology and speaks to this atrocity. I am interested in furthering their cause in an effort to help patients, myself included, who are suffering with mismanaged thyroid disease care.
Thyroid patients are speaking out about the inadequacy of current treatment protocols which are leaving thousands of patients with symptoms that diminish their quality of life. The field of endocrinology believes this occurrence to be rare. However, the success of ThyroidChange and many other thyroid advocacy initiatives is demonstrating that further investigation is warranted. The suffering of thyroid patients affects many; including patient husbands, wives, sons, and daughters. Thyroid disease also affects the entire population of American taxpayers since undiagnosed or mismanaged thyroid disease needlessly results in a large number of citizens that are on government disability insurance and assistance programs. Statistics state that 1 in 5 individuals suffer from thyroid dysfunction or 20% of your constituents who can benefit from your support. The true statistics may be higher, however, even if only 100,000 American people are receiving government assistance in the amount of just $9,000 a year because of their mismanaged thyroid care, that would equate to $900,000,000 in government assistance. The cost to all American taxpayers is huge. This doesn’t have to continue. We need your help to see that it doesn’t.
ThyroidChange initiated an international petition speaking to this reality (www.change.org/petitions/endocrinologists-patients-with-thyroid-dysfunction-demand-better-care). In less than a few months, the petition has amassed tens of thousands of signatures. By sharing patient experiences, the petition shows how present day licensing structure does not ensure that endocrinologists are sufficiently up-to-date on current treatments, testing methods, and/or research. I ask that you please view the petition and the ThyroidChange website, as it demonstrates how current endocrinology treatment and testing methods are insufficient and are keeping a staggering large number of thyroid patients ill.
We believe timely and necessary change can happen, but we need your help to lobby for increased funding in thyroid research and strengthened continuing education requirements for endocrinologists. I look forward to your response and the possibility of working together on this issue. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Best regards,
